11-17-11 Gospel for All

Today's Reading: Acts 10-11

Acts 10:44–48
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

I get encouraged every time I read this passage in the Bible.  It proves how Gods love is extended to all people and that the Gospel is not simply for the select few.  God has a vision for the world and wants all men to come unto Him and accept the wonderful gift He has so richly bestowed upon all mankind.

Peter tells everyone about Jesus.  He tells them about his powerful life and terrible death. He tells how God raised Jesus and made him judge of all. It is through Jesus that people can be forgiven of their sins. This is the greatest relief and release to Cornelius, who has tried so hard to get right with God.

As Peter speaks, the Holy Spirit comes upon everyone listening. The Roman house, so alien to the Jews, is filled with the sound of Gentiles praising God in strange languages, just as the apostles had done on the Day of Pentecost. Peter doesn’t hesitate. He baptizes them all.

Tomorrow's Reading: Acts 12-13
