12-3-11 The Purpose of Our Gifts

Today's Reading: 1 Cor 12-14

1 Corinthians 12:3–6
3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

Many people throughout my ministry have had questions concerning this topic. Paul gives the Corinthians a simple test for checking the source of a spiritual gift. If someone says, ‘Jesus be cursed,’ then they are certainly not under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is entirely devoted to revealing Jesus as Lord — the only true God.

Now on the other hand, anyone who declares that ‘Jesus is Lord’ is clearly guided and enabled to do so by the Holy Spirit.

Paul goes on to explain that there are many ways in which the Holy Spirit works. Some Christians speak with great wisdom or insight, while others have a strong faith. These gifts, in all their variety, come from the same Holy Spirit. Again, all the gifts have the same purpose, which is to equip the church, the body of Christ to carry out the great commission.

Tomorrow's Reading: 1 Cor 15-16
