12-5-11 Face to Face

Today's Reading: 2 Cor 1-4

2 Corinthians 3:17–18
17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Paul tells us that he agreed that the law of Moses was glorious, but that it had its limitations. It condemned us to death, because we failed to keep it. It was written on tablets of stone and not on our inner hearts. Its glory didn’t last, because it was surpassed by the work of Christ.

Even though the law brought condemnation, Jesus brought forgiveness.

The Jews who live by the law of Moses are still wearing a veil. The veil is over their hearts, preventing them responding to the grace of God. They are stuck in legalism and guilt.

The good news is that Christ can lift the veil away.

He is mighty to save.

In Christ we can be forgiven our sin, delivered from guilt and restored to a face-to-face relationship with God. Open to God, we reflect his glory, a glory which doesn’t fade, but gets ever more glorious.
