Romans 4:20
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
God counted Abraham’s faith as righteousness.
Genesis 15:6
6 And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
It wasn’t a righteousness achieved by keeping God’s law. God’s law wasn’t known until the time of Moses. It wasn’t a righteousness through being circumcised, or offering Isaac — because both of those experiences were still in the future. It wasn’t a righteousness based on Abraham’s perfect choices — his mistakes are recorded for all to read.
Abraham wasn’t perfect — but he had faith.
